Manganese Greensand is formulatedfrom a glauconite greensand which iscapable of reducing iron, manganese andhydrogen sulfide from water throughoxidation and filtration. Soluble iron andmanganese are oxidized and precipitatedby contact with higher oxides of manganeseon the greensand granules. Thehydrogen sulfide is reduced by oxidationto an insoluble sulfur precipitate.Precipitates are then filtered and removedby backwashing. When the oxidizingcapacity power of the ManganeseGreensand bed is exhausted, the bed hasto be regenerated with a weak potassiumpermanganate (KMnO4) solution thusrestoring the oxdizing capacity of thebed. 1 to 2 ounces of potassiumpermanganate, in solution, per cubic footof Manganese Greensand is consideredsufficient for normal regneration. It isrequired to vigorously backwash andregenerate the bed when it is placed inservice and before its oxidation capacityis totally exhausted. Operating the bedafter oxidation capacity is exhausted willreduce its service life and may cause staining.
