There are many applications where there is only one 20" Big Blue housing installed. Carbon blocks have the most carbon capacity, but very little dirt loading capability. Sediment filters have a high capacity for suspended solids but no carbon filtration. Here is the solution to this dilemma, a filter that combines high dirt holding capability of a sediment filter with carbon to treat taste, odor, color, chlorine and DBP's.
Many of you have asked about my solar powered RV. It is still a work in progress. If there are any ambitious solar power experts/engineers reading this I could use a lot of help with this one! I am hoping to have it on the road soon! I have the 12-volt stuff sorted out, it is the 110 volt that scares me. I am ok with 2 wires, red and black, but beyond that I am just lost!
I have returned from my travels to Central and South America.
The first part of my travel was in Costa Rica. There I found environmental issues similar to those here in the United States and also the pattern of environmental issues of a developing nation.
The coastline is being developed in many areas and the demand for water causes issues similar to other coastal communities. When groundwater is pumped at rates that cause the water table to drop subsurface aquafers can collapse reducing overall capacity. Furthermore, the drop in the water table in some areas is resulting in sea water intrusion into previously fresh water aquifers.
This makes treating the water for potable use costly and energy intensive as the high pressures necessary for brackish and sea water reverse osmosis systems consume significantly more electricity than is required to treat water of lower salinity.
Many coastal communities have large amounts of plastics and other debris in the sea water. There is a debate as to whether the cities are lacking in rain runoff treatment systems or if it is caused by ocean going vessels dumping trash in the waters to avoid disposal fees when they reach their destination.
I stayed in a lodge in the rainforest that was run entirely from hydroelectric power. While the amenities were quite basic the impact on the environment was as minimal as possible. The rainforests were thick with multiple layers of growth and tremendous biodiversity. Costa Rica puts a tremendous effort into preservation of the rainforests and overall ecological preservation. Hunting is illegal in Costa Rica.
My travels through Panama and Columbia were limited to larger cities. All three countries; Costa Rica, Panama and Columbia are far behind the United States in regards to automotive emissions standards. As all three countries have sensitive rainforest areas; this is of great concern since all three have a large concentration of diesel power vehicles. The exhaust particulate becomes the hydroscopic nuclei. That is; rain drops do not form in pure air, they condense on suspended particles in the atmosphere, in this case vehicle emissions particulate.
