In 1996, the U.S. Congress approved legislation that toughensfederal regulations designed to protect the nations drinkingwater. Subsequently, the President signed the bill to authorize$7.6 billion dollars over seven years to improve deterioratingmunicipal and rural water systems.Part of this comprehensive legislation calls for the EPA toestablish more stringent standards to control cryptosporidium,giardia cysts and other common drinking water contaminantsthat pose significant risks. Cryptosporidium is the protozoanthat reportedly infected over 400,000 people in Milwaukee,Wisconsin, resulting in a significant number of deaths relatedto the outbreak. To date, the best known method to controlcryptosporidium and giardia cysts in water is through the useof microfiltration, or employment of absolute rated filter cartridgesfine enough to remove cyst sized particles. Surfacewaters are most susceptible because animals live nearby,contributing to the cyst population found in water. For thisreason the Surface Water Treatment Rule was established toregulate drinking water taken from reservoirs, lakes, rivers,ponds and streams.
