There are many applications where there is only one 20" Big Blue housing installed. Carbon blocks have the most carbon capacity, but very little dirt loading capability. Sediment filters have a high capacity for suspended solids but no carbon filtration.
Here is the solution to this dilemma, a filter that combines high dirt holding capability of a sediment filter with carbon to treat taste, odor, color, chlorine and DBP's. Our MMB filter has a tremendous surface area of carbon, this type of filter construction allows the filter to hold a lot of dirt while maximizing carbon contact. In tests this type of filter tends to outperform a carbon block when new because of the vast surface area of carbon but organic removal performance will fall off sooner than a carbon block because there is less overall carbon.
Some choose to run this filter even in our triple big blue setup and change this filter every 2-3 months to extend the life of the carbon block filters in the second and third position.
